Full bio
Julie Maria Barkou emerged onto the Danish music scene in 2004 with her debut album Beautiful Minor, released on Universal Records at just 22 years old. Over two decades, she has solidified herself as one of Denmark's most respected songwriters and performers, releasing seven studio albums that showcase her distinctive approach to pop music. Her early work on albums like På kanten af virkeligheden (2007), Yaguar (2009), and Kom (2012) established her as a versatile artist capable of crafting both radio-friendly tracks and deeply introspective compositions.
Her collaborations reflect the respect she commands within the Danish music establishment. She has worked alongside notable artists including Steffen Brandt, Tina Dickow, Mads Langer, and Tim Christensen. Beyond her own recordings, Julie Maria lent her voice to the title theme of DR's beloved Christmas calendar Pagten, a role that extended her cultural reach beyond traditional music audiences. Her work has earned recognition through a P3 Prize nomination and consistent critical praise from Danish music press.
After years of transformation, Julie Maria has deliberately shifted away from hit-driven production toward a more artistically adventurous identity. Her 2017 album Danse Til Vi Dør marked a significant moment in this evolution, arriving after a period of personal renewal. Through her project JulieMariaInTheLoop, she continues to develop new material and live sessions that reflect her commitment to growth as an artist. Today, she operates as a singular creative force on stage, combining live looping and compositional sophistication to create intimate yet expansive performances that connect directly with her audience.
